Pleasant Windows 7 Experience

Today in class my professor asked if anyone was able to access the Internet and I was on, everything working fine. He made me go onto a website and pull up a movie which he wanted to show during his lecture. I got the video alright and waited for him. When it came time, he requested my computer. I was unsure if my EEE PC would work with the classroom’s projector as I had never tried the VGA port. I also was not sure if Windows 7 would work with it.

To my great surprise, it all went flawless. As soon as I plugged in the VGA cable, my screen blinked, and a few seconds later my screen was on and the projector was projecting the image without any hesitation, dialog boxes, or other issues. It was nice to see everything simply work, without issues.

I wonder how the machine determined the correct resolution for the projector (as that has been an issue with other people’s computers). I also wonder if there are settings that can be changed so the projector is not in mirror mode.

Anyway, I thought I would share my pleasant experience with Windows 7 on my EEEPC.

T41 Update 1

The Thinkpad T41 update project is officially halted. The system is going to be sold on ebay for parts and repair. After purchasing a “new” inverter from ebay, and putting it, the system seemed to work more sporadically than before. The “new” inverter actually displayed the signs described of defective ones.

I will post a link to the auction of the system once it goes up on ebay.

I have found a IBM T60 to purchase which is working and I believe will suite me well.

Thinkpad T41 Repair Project

I recently purchased an IBM Thinkpad T41 from a shady man…but for a great price. I paid $75 for this beast of a system. At first, it seemed to have everything and it actually powered on….How wrong was I. The system lacks a hard drive at the moment. Once I was able to power it on it beeped like mad.  After some research I found out that long beep followed by 2 short beeps means to check the System Board, DIMM, and LCD assembly, in that order. I took the memory out and tested it in my trusty T30. The memory works. I’m hoping the System Board is ok, since i have no way of testing that. Finally I called IBM support and they told me that the LCD inverter may need to be replaced. I used a tutorial from Laptop Repair 101on how to disassemble the LCD.

As it currently stands, I ordered an LCD inverter from Ebay. I am hoping that this would fix it as I can not wait to use this sweet computer.

If everything works out, this could be a wonderful system for about $100-130.

I will keep you posted on the progress of the system update / work status.

Edit:

Here are some pictures of the LCD taken apart:
