Quick Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Review

Category Device, Review

I have been using Nokia devices for about 2 years. I started out with the Nokia N95, had an N75 for a few days, and then moved on to a Nokia N82. As I am awaiting the release of the N97, I became bored of my N82 and wanted to try out another device. A trip to HowardForums produced a link to a deal on Amazon for a Nokia 5800 XpressMusic for $306. I hesitated and ended up missing the deal. The very next night, there was a deal for the same phone on Dell.com. I ended up buying it for $305.27 (take that Amazon).

I received the device on Wednesday of last week (April 22, 2009). I used it for about 3 days and ended up shipping it off to a member of HoFo who said he will trade a N85 for it (we’ll see if it goes through).
My impression of the 5800XM is that it is a very good mid-tier device. For people coming from a low end, free or cheap flip phone which they get from their carrier, this device is light years ahead of their current devices. However, if you are coming from a high end, N-series device, the 5800 will leave you wanting more.

The good: The screen is nice and large. It lets you see a lot more information than the regular Nokia screens. While indoors, the screen seems very bright. Although a resistive screen, it was very responsive. Watching movies on the screen was a pleasant experience. The speakers on the device are outstanding, as they should be for a music-centric device. Overall, the browser is good. I tried various sites and none of them crashed it.

The not so good: When outdoors, I had problems seeing the information on the screen (note I still had the Nokia screen protector on it, which may have been the problem). Coming from a N82, the camera of the 5800XM left much to be desired. The sensor is obviously not as good (read expensive) as the one the N82 (they are both from CZ. I don’t think the megapixels matter as there are many other Nokia devices which have 3.2MP cameras that are way better). The camera produced a green tint in all the pictures that I took. Also, the video recording had some noise. Typing on the device was OK, but not as good as tying on the iPhone. The 5800 has 4 options for typing, full QWERTY, T9, mini-qwerty, and handwriting recognition. The full QWERTY is annoying in the way that it is split up into 3 parts (letter, number/symbols/accents). I found that typing on the T9 was much faster, for me, than the QWERTY.

Other notes: The device would be much better if there was some sort of hardware key which allows you to change songs (the remote is nice, but it adds to the wires). Battery life should be slightly longer (maybe my experience would have been better if I had used the device for longer). Why, oh why, was Nokia Internet Radio not included for the 5800XM, a music-centric phone???
Although this review might seem more negative than positive, I still think that the phone is a good device. For the average user, the device has many features to keep them happy. I just think that the phone is not for me, as I am used to having more features and a keyboard. I cannot speak of gaming on the device (it comes with a few pre-installed games), because I did not have time to play them.

Crank High Voltage

CRANK: HIGH VOLTAGE from Steve Samblis on Vimeo.

By now means do I claim to be an accredited movie reviewer, but I wish to venture into that as well (in the same manner that I ventured into writing tutorials and producing content)…

Anyway, last night was opening night for Crank High Voltage, the second movie in the Crank series. Again, the main actor is Jason Statham and again he has to go through various means to keep his body alive. This time around he needs to be electrically charged at all times, in order to keep his heart transplant working while he hunts down his actual, still beating heart.

The movie is filled with hardcore violence, graphic scenes (not for the squeamish), and comedic sequences which left me crying for a good part of the movie.

After some googling I found out that the entire movie was shot for less than $20 million and using prosumer Canon XH-A1 cameras. For such a limited budget, the movie definitely delivers.

My final verdict is that you should probably see it (if you liked the first one, then this one should appeal to you as well). Keep in mind that I saw it with some friends and their thought was that the first one better…to each his own

In my opinion, the movie does a good job of entertaining a broad audience. It tons of gun fights, hand-to-hand combat, and nudity. If you enjoyed Turrets guy, you will like one of the characters which has FBT (Full Body Turrets) which ensues tons of hilarity throughout.

Nokia Photo Browser – quick review

Nokia just released another application for its S60 phones. The application is called Photo Browser. The application provides a fun way to view all your images from your phone. It has cool 3D effects and animations as you scroll through the images.  The application displays images in a grid that is 3 pictures tall and 3 pictures wide. You can use your select button to view an image and the * and # keys to zoom in and out.

The application does not have my options. The only ones currently available are ImageInfo, Delete, and Exit.  ImageInfo shows the name of the file as well as the date the picture was taken.

On my N82, the application runs a bit slow. Scrolling through the images, it takes a short while for them to become focused. Also, when zooming it, it takes a few moments for the image to focus. Holding down the scrolling button to go either left or right displays a nice 3D wall of photos, however, some are shown as silver blocks until the phone has gone through and gotten a thumbnail of every image.

Overall, I think that ImageExchange is a much better application for image viewing. The experience which ImageExchange provides is much better. It scrolls through the photos much faster, and is noticeably better at focusing images. ImageExchange seems to be much more responsive when viewing images. It is also faster when zooming in on photos.

Another place where ImageExchange exceeds Photo Browser is the amount of functions incorporated into the software. ImageExchange allows you to upload all your images to the Internet (although not to Share on Ovi), it has the Time function which shows you pictures from a certain month, your favorite images, and a grid view that is 4×4 images. Not only can you see your own photos, but you can go online and view other people’s images, a functionality which is completely lacking in Photo Browser.

I hope that the developers of Photo Browser integrate their efforts with the ones from ImageExchange. Together, they could develop an amazing image viewing application. It would be excellent if ImageExchange could also show you your videos. Finally, integrating ImageExchange into Share on Ovi would be amazing, as you would have one less online photo service which you have to worry about.

Movie Review: WANTED

Being hesitant to purchase a ticket for Wanted, I went into the theater expecting nothing more than some run-of-the-mill action flick. I was not a huge fan of the concept of spinning/turning bullets. The only pull factor for me to see the movie was Angelina Jolie.

Given my predesposition to the movie, I never thought I would sit down a write a review, much less a praise for the movie. However, soon after the beginning credits roled I was entranced into the story of the main character, an ordinary accountant, or so he thought.

After more plot twists than I could shake a stick at, I was sitting at the edge of my seat trying to comprehend who was good and who was bad. Ultimately, the movie was excellent. Though it may not win any awards for best acting it has a lot to offer. From ridicously sick car chases to numerous futuristic battles and weapons, this movie has almost as many effects as all three Matrix movies combined.

My final verdict is that the movie is well worth the money and time to watch it if you enjoy action flicks with extreme special effects. Did I mention that Angelina Jolie drove a Lada? GO SEE IT!
